Karen Schaaf

I have been the BASSC educational audiologist since January 2014, but I have been an audiologist for over 30 years. I previously worked in a variety of settings, including performing the initial diagnostic audiology tests for infants who failed their newborn hearing screenings. It has been wonderful to reconnect with many of those children and help them along their educational journeys. In fact, one of my favorite things about working at BASSC is the connection that I have made with students and their families. In my spare time, I foster deaf, blind, deaf & blind, and other special needs dogs through Speak Rescue and Sanctuary.

I have been at BASSC as an itinerant teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing since 2019. I have been in the education field in a variety of roles for over 25 years. I love that as an itinerant I’m able to work with students from early childhood to 12th grade at multiple school districts. I often get to work with the same students for many years. I love to spend my summers off traveling, playing sand volleyball, and cycling.

My favorite part of working for BASSC is how everyone is truly working for what is in the best interest of our students. Outside of work I enjoy bowling and traveling to new places (mostly new beaches). I have two dogs who I treat like human children. I'm the assistant coach for the Grant Middle School bowling team. I wish people knew that our kids are capable of so much more than they're given credit for.
